![]() Brees is a solid golfer, playing to about a 3 handicap. Any new plans for the Cox Celebrity Championship in your first year as host? It’s been a great event in the past, but certainly we feel like there’s a lot of value we can bring and a lot of things we can add to it. The celebrity list has always been very good, but we’re going to continue to build that. From a sponsorship standpoint, engage a lot of local and national sponsors to be able to participate. I think really just the competitive nature of it as well. My goal and my vision for the tournament, No. 1, is to be able to raise significant funds for local charities in San Diego, but also really build a first-class event that the community can share in and participate in and one that celebrities love coming back to. You’ll be playing in the event, right? Absolutely. What’s your best finish at the tournament? Last year, I think I finished top 10 or top 15. At some point, I’m going to win this thing. I’m not making any guarantees for this year, but at some point, I will win. How often do you come back to San Diego? We kept our home in San Diego from when I played there. We still have so many great relationships and a lot of friends back in San Diego and it’s such a nice place to get away to or have the opportunity to take some time off there. Now with my son, we kind of hunker down and New Orleans is absolutely our home base. But we still love going back to San Diego from time to time. There are some great people in San Diego doing some great things and I’m just glad we’re able to participate in that and give back to that community as well. A CLOSER LOOK AT DREW BREES Born: January 15, 1979 in Dallas, Texas. Vitals: Quarterback for NFL’s New Orleans Saints since 2006; MVP performance in Super Bowl XLIV helped Saints win first championship; four-time Pro Bowl selection; three-time All-Pro selection; spent first five years of NFL career with San Diego Chargers; Academic All-America, Player of the Year as a Purdue University senior; two-time Heisman Trophy finalist; diverse athlete who also excels in tennis, bowling, golf and paintball. Best round ever: 71 on two occasions: at New Orleans Country Club and Morgan Run Resort and Club. Favorite golfers: Said Brees, “There are a lot of guys that I like. I like Phil Mickelson, he’s a San Diego product and I’ve had a chance to play with him a few times. I like Mike Weir, I’ve also played with him in the past. There are other guys. I just chose two lefties — not sure why I did that, I’m left-handed at baseball, so I’m a left-hander at heart.” Other three members of his ultimate foursome: Brees thought two would be plenty — Major League Baseball Hall of Fame member Ted Williams and Hollywood icon John Wayne. (“I’ll take three for now, because it would take us a while to play that round,” said Brees.) Favorite courses include: Pebble Beach, Pine Valley and Royal Melbourne. Added Brees, “I haven’t played in Scotland or Ireland yet, so that’s next on my list. Someday, once Baylen gets older.” |
