Eddie Fiero has worked at Montebello Golf Course for 30 years, starting out as a locker room attendant in 1978. He’s fulfilled a variety of roles since, and also takes pride in helping customers and children in the community. His motto on the course is, “It was a good shot until you hit it.”

Explain your job responsibilities.
Making sure the facility is run well, and customer service, customer service, customer service. It’s important to keep everybody happy while they spend money. I also give lessons, and that’s probably the part of my job I enjoy the most. The smile on my students’ faces tells it all.

What do you like most about your job?
You meet so many different people. We’re fortunate to have celebrities like Fernando Valenzuela, Smokey Robinson and Oscar De La Hoya play out here, and they’re happy to do stuff for us like come out to meet the kids at junior programs. They’re really good about doing it; they’re just like family.

In addition to your day job at Montebello, how do you stay involved in the community?
We’ve been doing free clinics and nine-hole tournaments as part of the Montebello junior program every summer for 10 years, for kids ages 4 to 18. It gets them doing something else besides running around the streets. It puts them in a better atmosphere and gives them a chance to be better people. They learn how to conduct themselves, enjoy life and enjoy the game.

How did you get involved in the golf business?
My dad’s been playing out of Montebello since the 1950s, and when I was growing up I went there a lot with him. When I was 12 years old, [director of golf] Tom Camacho got tired of seeing me standing around, so he put me to work.

What’s been the key to your success?
Remembering names and faces. Everybody loves to be recognized when you see them walk through the door.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Treat every guy like he’s your father and every woman like she’s your mother.

How often do you get to play golf?
I play three to four times a week.

What’s your favorite hole at Montebello?
No. 16. It’s the only par-3 that I haven’t aced. I’m still trying.

What’s your best score?
A month and a half ago, I shot 64. I had a putt on No. 18 for a 63, but I choked.

What’s your handicap?
Right now, a zero. My lowest ever was a plus-1.

What’s your most treasured golf possession?
My son, now that he’s matured in his golf game. It makes me proud to see him out there knowing he’s applied what I’ve taught him.  SG
