![]() Emily Tubert will join the University of Arkansas women's golf team this fall (COURTESY: USGA). Competing in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship in June — her first-ever match-play tournament — the 18-year-old Burbank resident outlasted an impressive field to capture the prestigious USGA event. Tubert defeated incoming USC transfer Lisa McCloskey by a 3-and-2 margin in the 36-hole final held at Warren Golf Club at Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. “Amazing” and “surreal” are words Tubert used to describe the win, but she’s had success at the local — in events on the SCPGA and JAGS junior tours — and national levels, having won the AJGA Under Armour/Vicky Hurst Championship in May. Tubert, who’s been playing golf for only five years, has a long competitive streak. At an early age, she started playing organized sports such as basketball and softball. In her freshman year of high school, she decided to try something new — golf. “There’s more lifespan in golf,” says Tubert. “I thought I’d keep going and see where it took me.” She signed up for lessons at DeBell Golf Club in Burbank and discovered she had a pretty good swing. A couple of years later, she shot a 5-under-par 67 to win the CIF sectional championship — the only female to secure this title at John Burroughs High School. By her junior year, Tubert had caught the eye of University of Arkansas recruiters and was offered a scholarship. This fall, she will enroll as an intended kinesiology major and a women’s golf team member. “The win at the Women’s Amateur Public Links proved that I can play with the best,” said Tubert. And if that means turning pro, she’s cautiously optimistic: “I plan to play all four years [of college]. If the opportunity presents itself, I’ll see where it goes.” ALSO SEE: Tubert triumphs at 2010 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship Tubert notches win at JAGS Tour Junior Masters Tubert wins SCGA Junior Challenge |
