From Rinks to the Links: Jane Rah

Trading her ice skates for golf spikes, Jane Rah has become one of the country’s top juniors.

BY CHARLIE SCHROEDERPublished: May, 2006

Had it not been for the success of South Korea’s Se Ri Pak on the golf course, Jane Rah might never have left the ice.

The Torrance resident and 2005 CIF high school girl’s golf champion spent much of her youth training to become the next Michelle Kwan. But when Rah saw Pak win the 1998 U.S. Women’s Open, she quickly traded in her skates for spikes.

It didn’t take long for Rah, 15, to become one of the country’s best juniors. Last year she won the CIF Girl’s State Championship and the Family Toyota/Family Honda AJGA Tournament, and was the youngest member of the Junior Solheim Cup.

We asked her to name the five most influential people in her life:

My dad, Charlie Rah. He books all my flights and hotels so I don’t have to worry about it. I just tell him what hotel I want to go to and he has it planned out. He does everything for me.

My mom, Mija Rah. She does all the driving and cooks all the food. She takes care of all the house chores so I don’t really do a lot when I’m home.

Se Ri Pak. It’s important for girls to have role models like her because she’s doing things that a woman can actually do. It’s a lot easier for me to relate to her than it is to, say, Tiger Woods. I admire what he does but I can’t relate to it because he does things that I can’t do, because I’m a girl. It helps that Se Ri Pak is a female and is Korean. It helps me understand. I can go through the exact same thing that she does.

My uncle, Kwang Lim Rah. He helped me early on because he understood the game. He understood how everything worked, so it was a lot easier for us to relate to each other.

Tiger Woods. I like the way he handles all the situations and the way he’s learned to dominate. He brought a new look to golf. He brought a new face to the game. You can work out, get in shape, hit it longer and do all these things. I think that’s been a really big influence.
