George Lopez

The former host of the Bob Hope Classic is a veteran at celebrity tournaments.

BY JOEL BEERSPublished: November, 2009

Lopez owns a home overlooking Pebble Beach Golf Links (COURTESY: Bob Hope Classic).
Claim to fame: The stand-up comic and star of the “The George Lopez Show” launched a late-night TV show this month on TBS.
Golf expertise: The San Fernando native learned to play the game by knocking lemons around with a golf club in his back yard. He played his first course, El Cariso Golf Course in Sylmar, at the age of 21 and really learned the game at Hansen Dam Golf Course in Pacoima. He owns a home overlooking Pebble Beach Golf Links and is a member of Burbank’s Lakeside Golf Club. He’s funny on the course, but also serious, with a handicap of 10.
What he means to the game: Few comedians have ever embraced the game as much as Lopez. In 2007, he was named the first celebrity host of the Bob Hope Classic since the man himself. He served in that function for two years, and he still plays in high-profile pro-am events. For the past two years, Lopez has hosted the National Kidney Celebrity Golf Classic at Lakeside.
Quotable: “If the wind keeps blowing, all putts will break toward the outlet mall. Everything will break toward the Zegna store.”
— Lopez, discussing course conditions in a press conference prior to the 2008 Bob Hope Classic.
