Maury Povich

The talk show personality lets his clubs do the talking on the course.

Maury Povich got hooked on golf when his famous sportswriter father, Shirley, was covering professional golf for the Washington Post. Povich is an accomplished golfer who once qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur. He plays to a 1 handicap, but says he really should be a 2 or 3. "I play a lot of social rounds at home from the white tees."

How did you get started in golf?
My dad was a caddy and loved the game and it was always special to me. I never took it seriously until I was 30. I was never competitive until I was 50 when my wife [Connie Chung] bought me lessons with Peter Kostis.

How often do you play?
I play in a senior circuit called the Society of Seniors and I still try to qualify for the Senior Amateur. I play quite a bit, so I have no excuse.

What is your best round?
I've shot 68 a lot of times. In a club championship 20 years ago I was 6 under going into the last hole, a par 5, and made a 7.

What is your most memorable moment on the golf course?
Making match play in the Senior Amateur in 2000.

Your most embarrassing moment?
Being the medalist with two holes to go in the U.S. Senior Open qualifying and finishing 8, 6.

What courses haven't you played that you want to?
Some of the older courses, like the upper peninsula of Michigan and Crystal Downs. I haven't played Prairie Dunes.

What's the strangest thing you've seen on the golf course?
Charles Barkley's swing.

If you could change one thing about your game, what would it be?
I would have taken it up earlier. Other than that, I am what I am.

What's your favorite club in the bag?
It used to be the putter, but as I get older I think it's the driver.
