Pleasant Surprise

At just 13, Torrance's Jenny Shin captured the U.S. Girls Junior title in impressive fashion

By John RegerPublished: September, 2006

There was nothing in Jenny Shin's career that predicted she would win the U.S. Girls Junior championship in Charlotte, N.C., in late July.
Going into the competition, the 13-year- old from Torrance was ranked 18th in the GolfWeek/Titleist junior rankings. The girl she beat in the finals, Vicky Hurst, was ranked sixth.

Shin's goal was to make the quarterfinals and she booked her hotel room for that length of time and didn't even bring enough clothes to get through the weekend.
After becoming the second-youngest winner of the event, behind Aree Song, Shin will undoubtedly be changing her mindset.

"I don't think it is really about age," she said. "It's about how much you practice and how much talent you have. It matters more how good you are."

Shin not only wants to get better, she knows it will be a necessity as she progresses.

"Actually, winning this will be harder for me because I have some things that I have to do better," said Shin, who will be a freshman at Torrance High in the fall. "Now that I came up this high, I can't go down. I have to go higher and higher, so I have to practice more and concentrate."  n
