![]() He earned degrees in mechanical engineering and law from Stanford and became owner and president of the family business, Frank Vernon Diamond Brokerage Wholesale Jewelers. A member at Burbank's Lakeside Golf Club, Vernon has served as president there as well as the Southern California and California Golf Associations. He's even Tom Watson's fraternity brother. "I was introduced to golf by my father. Growing up in Hungary, he played soccer and ran track. But golf caught his eye, and he offered my brother and me the opportunity to see if we wanted to get involved, and we started taking lessons at the Joe Kirkwood Golf Center in Studio City. We both loved it. "I am surprised that I'm only the second USGA president to hail from Southern California, because this is a golfing center and there are so many USGA members and great courses out here. "What are my goals in office? I want to make sure we still conduct the best championships. I want to foster our relationships with the state and regional golf associations, on whom we depend so heavily and who do so much for the game of golf. That's pretty key to me given my background. I really am very anxious to make sure we take advantage of the Internet. "I'm excited for the upcoming U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. For one, I'm not going to have to jump on an airplane and leave the West Coast. "What's kept me in golf? I still love going out there, whether it's practicing or playing a round of golf with friends or even relative strangers. There's just something that resonates with me. I really want to make sure that other people have the opportunity to be exposed to it and have a decision whether they want to get involved in it." |
