 Joe Grohman has stepped up to help disabled veterans (PHOTO: Eddie Meeks). “She had heard about some of the special-interest clinics I had done and asked if I could do one for disabled veterans,” Grohman said. “I knew this would be a fun way to positively affect the lives of these heroes, so I jumped on board.” Grohman, who grew up and learned to play golf on Air Force bases, has conducted 11 such clinics for more than 200 participants. Each quarterly clinic pairs an active-duty Marine or Navy chief with a vet for the day. These teams, along with PGA professionals and other volunteers, work for 45 minutes each at putting, chipping and driving stations. Participants also benefit from the program’s two solo rider carts as well as the adaptive clubs and putters that inventor Pete Lowery brings to each clinic. “It’s awesome to see the vets and active-duty Marines and sailors interacting with each other during these clinics,” said Grohman, who’s worked at Navy Golf Course for 12 years. “I don’t know who gets more out of the clinics, the vets or the volunteers.” Another endeavor Grohman is involved in is Patriot Golf Day, a nationwide campaign that benefits the Folds of Honor Foundation, which raises money to fund educational scholarships for families of military personnel disabled or killed in the line of duty. Navy Golf Course will join other sites across the country over Labor Day weekend in early September by participating in the campaign. Golfers can make donations on top of their green fees at courses like Navy — in 2008, the program raised approximately $2 million. SCPGA Assistant Executive Director Nikki Gatch said of Grohman, who has been nominated for the PGA’s 2009 Patriot Award: “Joe is unyielding in his support of our military and plays a major role in the lives of current and retired servicemen by providing guidance and instruction in golf.” To learn more about Disabled Veterans Days at Navy Golf Course, e-mail joe.grohman@navygolfcourse.com.
