![]() Here are some of his thoughts on that big event and his life around the sport. I was drawn to the game by some childhood friends and an older cousin who became a pro. My brother and I bought cheap clubs and started playing at the local 9-hole course six miles outside of town. We would mow neighbors' lawns to earn money for balls and half of our season membership. We would ride our bikes and play all day long if we didn't have lawns to do. Why did I make it my career? Being outside and playing golf was fun, so when I was discussing my future with my high school guidance counselor she asked me what I liked and I told her golf, but I wasn't good enough to be a pro. She asked if I was interested in working on courses and if I knew there was a degree in this area. I secured a job working on this nine-hole course and upon graduation from high school enrolled into the Michigan State University Turf Management program. My greatest accomplishment in golf is providing the best possible course conditions each day for the golfers to enjoy and play on. Having my children involved in golf also is special. Our son Brad is on the administrative staff for the 2008 PGA Championship and our daughter Heather has worked on golf courses. What about the U.S. Open am I most looking forward to? Everything. I can't wait to show the world Torrey Pines and what a great job this entire staff and city have done here. Among my favorite traits of the South Course at Torrey Pines are the topography, the property and the history of this place. What a great municipal golf course. |
