For the first time since 1990, both the boys and girls Southern California squads won the Junior Americas Cup, a team event with some of the most talented youngsters from western North America.

The girls, captained by Southern California PGA assistant executive director Nikki Gatch, bested the field at Willow Park Country Club in Calgary, Alberta, on July 31. All Southern California members — Ani Gulugian (Irvine), Demi Runas (Torrance), Victoria Fallgren (Lakewood) and Veronica Valerio (Temecula) — finished inside the top 10 and combined for a tournament-record 10-under-par total.

The boys team, which trailed Mexico by a shot at Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Wash., heading into the final round (also on July 31), shot a 6-over 222 in tough conditions to grab a one-stroke victory. Patrick Cantlay of Los Alamitos spurred the Southern California contingent by earning medalist honors, and strong closing nines from James Back (Cerritos), John Young Kim (Los Alamitos) and Marshall Colby (Thousand Oaks) also aided the triumph.

In other tournament news:

• Simi Valley resident and San Diego State sophomore Matt Hoffenberg won the inaugural SCGA Match Play Championship on Aug. 14 at Santa Barbara’s Sandpiper Golf Club. He defeated Josh Dupont of Poway, 3 and 1. In the senior division, Corona Del Mar’s Boyd Martin rallied from three holes down with seven to play against Chip Bridges of Encinitas to win in 19 holes.

• Carlsbad’s Jamie Puterbaugh won his record-tying fourth consecutive San Diego City Amateur Golf Championship on Aug. 9 on the South Course at Torrey Pines. Allison Goodman won the women’s flight, and Howie Knodt captured the senior division.
