![]() (photo: USGA) Donald is the first British player to win the award since it was begun in 1990. American Keegan Bradley, whose two tour wins this year included the PGA Championship, was voted PGA Rookie of the Year. Donald also won two tournaments in 2011, as many as any other tour player, but did not win a major. He is only the fifth player in two decades who has not won a major to be named PGA Player of the Year. However, Donald recorded 14 top 10 finishes in the 19 tournaments he played and was awarded the Vardon Trophy for lowest adjusted scoring average. Donald won the Player of the Year honor over contenders Bradley, Nick Watney, Bill Haas and Webb Simpson. A PGA official speaking on condition of anonymity—the tour does not release vote counts or the order in which players finished in the balloting—described the voting for Donald as a landslide. Though it did not figure in the voting, Donald, 34, made history late in 2011 by becoming the first pro golfer to top both the American and the European tour money lists in the same year after he carded a third-place finish at the Dubai World Championship. "I've done a lot of things this year that probably not a lot of people would have given me much chance of doing," Donald said. "I think in the last 10 or 20 years, the power game has really taken control of golf. But I think I've been a little bit of a breath of fresh air knowing that's not the only way you can be successful. Through a good short game, good putting, managing your game, you can be successful in other ways. "I think I've proven that quite considerably this year." |
