Marcus Allen

The former running back now spends his days in front of cheering fans on the Celebrity Golf Tour.

By JOHN REGERPublished: September, 2007

Marcus Allen is a fixture on the Celebrity Golf Tour and plays in several events each year. But he still gets nervous whenever he plays in front of people. Allen, who was born in San Diego, is one of the more personable celebrity golfers, always stopping to sign autographs after a round or talk about his alma mater, USC. He won the Heisman Trophy in

1981 and spent most of his professional career as a running back for the Oak-land/Los Angeles Raiders, with whom he won the Super Bowl in 1984.

How did you get started in golf?
Growing up I was exposed to it but I quit. It was like when I took piano lessons and I quit. I regretted it. I started again in my mid-20s. That's when I really fell in love with it.

What is your handicap?
8.

How often do you play?
I try to play a couple of times a week.

What is your best round?
A 77 at Rancho San Marcos.

What is your most memorable moment on the golf course?
It would be at Edgewood in Lake Tahoe. I birdied 16, 17 and 18 during the celebrity tournament there.

What is your most embarrassing moment on a golf course?
Shanking a ball in front of a crowd at a tournament.

What courses haven't you played that you want to?
I am trying to play all the Top 100 courses. I haven't played Pine Valley or Bandon Dunes.

If you could change one thing about your game, what would it be?
Patience. I get fast and lose my rhythm.

What is your favorite golf club in the bag?
My 2-iron. I'll bet no one has ever said that before.  SG
