Matt Viguerie has been teaching golf for 15 years, and his students and classes at the Matt Viguerie Golf Academy at Shorecliffs Golf Course in San Clemente come in all shapes and sizes. Viguerie works with adults and juniors in private and group settings. He's also available to give playing lessons on the golf course, in addition to running summer junior golf camps and a winter golf camp. What's the best golf tip you've ever received? Ninety percent of the problems golfers have are caused by poor setup. What's the most common problem you see in your students? Poor grip. Most students tend to grip the club too much in the palm of the left hand. Ideally, the club is in the fingers and lies across the base of the pinkie and the middle of the forefinger. I usually draw a line across their glove to indicate where the club should go. What's the most challenging thing about being a golf teacher? Getting students to practice. I try to get them to at least hold a club in their hands for five minutes a day and work on their setup or a particular motion. What's your favorite instruction book? "Golf Digest Book of Drills." It is good to have drills you can do to help you feel the correct motion. I like books that have a lot of pictures and drills. What's your best round ever? I shot a 63 at Bandon Dunes in Oregon and have the non-competitive course record there. My best competitive round is a 63 in the Nevada Open. Who is your mentor or role model? My dad. He taught me a lot about perseverance and work ethic. Who's swing on the PGA Tour do you most admire and why? I really like Stuart Appleby's swing. It is so efficient. The best swings are the simplest, and his looks very repeatable. What was the first thing that attracted you to the game? I learned the game by working at a driving range when I was 11. I loved to practice, so I got a job picking up the balls along the fence of the range. All the ones I found I could hit. Your favorite part of the game? Hitting my driver. Don't tell my juniors that, though. I am always trying to get them to work on their short games. What professional golfer would you most like to be reincarnated as? Gotta be Tiger. He has it all. Your greatest achievement in golf? Branching out on my own and starting the Matt Viguerie Golf Academy. What's your motto on the course? Target, target, target! What's the one thing about your game you wish you could change? I wish I had more time to practice. Your favorite new golf product? My Bushnell rangefinder. I never have to look for sprinkler heads anymore. Who is your golf hero? Gary Player. Without a doubt, someone I would love to meet one day. SG |
