L.A. Story-Mike McMonegal

From junior programs to golf operations, Mike McMonegal helps oversee 17 courses in the country.

By Southland Golf MagazinePublished: October, 2007

Mike McMonegal is the assistant golf director in the golf operations division of the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, a position he's held for six years.

He first got into the golf business in 1985 when he accepted a part-time job washing carts and picking up range balls at Navy Golf Course in Seal Beach. A year-and-a-half later, the golf professional there offered him a job to become an assistant pro. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Here, he talks about his biggest challenge on the job, the key to his success and his love for the outdoors.

The L.A. County Golf Operations manages 17 public golf facilities. We oversee all areas of the golf course business. We also conduct a junior golf program with free golf lessons provided annually at our golf courses, parks and school districts. Golf tournaments are also hosted by our office, including events for juniors, women and seniors. We also run an Internet-based golf club, the Los Angeles County Golf Club.

The biggest challenge I face in my job now? That would be L.A. traffic. Traveling to 17 facilities is crazy.

The best advice I have for someone wanting to go into the golf industry is to have patience. Learn to be a good teacher. Smile and eliminate the words "no" and "can't."

The key to my success is waking up every morning and loving to go to work. Also, I have the gift of gab. You have to be able to talk to people in this business.

I started playing golf when I was 7 years old. I used to drive the golf cart and watch my dad play. In fact, my most treasured golf possession is a Bulls-Eye putter that was my dad's and the one I played with as a junior.

Lakewood Golf Course is my home course, where I get to play once a week. My handicap is 2, but I've been playing like a 10.

Being outdoors and working with the public is what I like most about my job. If I wasn't in the golf business I would either be in construction, a school teacher or playing in skins games five days a week.

My best round ever is a 64 at Lake-wood, but I don't have the card because [my playing partner] Len Kennett was 72 at the time and he shot a 68.

Riviera Country Club, Virginia Country Club, Lakewood and Recreation Park are some of  my favorite courses in Southern California.

My personal motto on the course? Thank God I can chip and putt.  SG
