As the Soboba Golf Classic approaches, keep an eye on this talented trio of 20-somethings from the Southland.

Three of the brightest young Nationwide Tour stars expected to appear in the upcoming Soboba Golf Classic at San Jacinto’s Country Club at Soboba Springs have strong Southland ties.

Jamie Lovemark, Kevin Chappell and Peter Tomasulo are all in their 20s, and they’re all poised to graduate to the PGA Tour in 2011. Unless any of them garners three Nationwide Tour victories before the tournament — which begins the week of September 27 and concludes October 3 — they figure to be competing for a share of the $1 million purse at the Nationwide Tour’s only stop in Southern California.

“We’re very excited about the opportunity to showcase all of the talent on the Nationwide Tour, especially local players who have made their mark this year and are headed in the right direction for 2011,” said tournament director Ed Winiecki.

Lovemark, a 22-year-old Rancho Santa Fe native, left USC early to turn professional last summer and found quick success, nearly winning the PGA Tour’s Frys.com Open last October. His playoff win at the Nationwide Tour’s Mexico Open Bicentenary this June all but sealed his PGA Tour status for next year.

Chappell’s near-certain status inside the top 25 on the Nationwide Tour money list — the cut-off for earning a PGA Tour card — came with a win at April’s Fresh Express Classic to go along with a pair of top-three finishes. The 24-year-old former UCLA All-American worked hard to have Nationwide Tour status this season, coming up short at many Monday qualifiers before eventually earning enough money in 2009 to guarantee a place to play for 2010.

Tomasulo has more Nationwide Tour experience than Chappell and Lovemark combined. The 28-year-old Long Beach  native’s 2008 campaign earned him a PGA Tour card for 2009, but he wound up back on the Nationwide this year. After a slow start, Tomasulo found his stride in a big way, winning last month’s Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic with a final-round 61.
