Ji-Hwan Park became the first amateur to win the California State Open since Jason Gore in 1997 when he shot a four-round total of nine-under par last month at Redhawk and CrossCreek golf clubs.

The Fullerton resident, 17, who came to the United States from South Korea less than a year ago, didn't let the pressure of the event affect his nerves.

"I stayed pretty calm all week," Park said through an interpreter. "The more difficult the situation, I got a little more calm. I had a little more concentration."

Park won the title by two strokes over John Lieber of San Diego and Ed McGlasson of Santa Ana.
