Passion Play: Paula Olsen

Paula Olsen parlays her love of golf and teaching into a successful career.

By Charlie SchroederPublished: May, 2006

After a brief stint in the family air-conditioning business proved unfulfilling, Paula Olsen — then a Bay Area resident — moved south to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a golf professional.

The eager 25-year-old sent out “millions of resumes” before being contacted by Tom Barber at Griffith Park.

“She was even more impressive in person than in print,” Barber said of his meeting with Olsen. “I hired her on the spot.”

Olsen, now 44, spent 13 years at Griffith Park, working her way up to the head of the junior golf program. But when the opportunity came up to take charge at the Tregnan Golf Academy in Los  Angeles, she jumped at the chance.

“If someone can expand their horizons, expand themselves and do better, I’m the first one to open the door,” Barber said.

Tregnan Academy opened in July 2000, a mere two miles from Griffith Park. Olsen became the first woman to earn the SCPGA Junior Golf Leader Award five years later, and it was only fitting that Barber presented it to her.

“Paula is a wonderful spirit and she really connects with young people,” Barber said. “They like her. She’s fun, she’s outgoing, she’s gregarious.”

Olsen funnels her passion for golf and teaching into her work at Tregnan Academy, where honesty and integrity are taught in conjunction with driving and putting.

“My dream is that these kids will always remember their time at Tregnan. Even if they don’t become great golfers, I really hope they learn how to treat people fairly,” she said. “If they get that now, it’ll stick with them for life.”

It seems like she’s succeeding, at least according to Charlene Kim, 15, who meets regularly with Olsen.

“Everyone knows how frustrating golf can be,” Kim said. “She’s shown me how to see the more positive side of things. To be patient and not to demand results right away. She’s always there for me.”
