Daniel MiernickiA San Diegan who was a four-year standout at Cathedral Catholic High School, Miernicki has emerged as one of the country’s best collegiate players this spring. The sophomore on the University of Oregon men’s golf team shot a career-low 64 in the final round of last month’s Stanford Intercollegiate to take medalist honors and also lead the Ducks to the team title, their third of 2009-10 for coach Casey Martin. The 6-foot-4 Miernicki now owns two individual titles this season and has Oregon poised for an NCAA run. Stephanie KonoUCLA’s furious 12-stroke comeback at April’s PING/ASU Invitational was fueled by Kono. The Bruins sophomore birdied the 17th and 18th holes en route to a 6-under-par 66 in the final round that produced slim margins of victory both for herself — by one over USC’s Jennifer Song — and for her team — also one clear of host Arizona State. It’s the first win of 2009-10 and her third-consecutive top-three finish. Also last month, Kono was named to the 2010 United States Curtis Cup team along with teammate Tiffany Lua (Rowland Heights). OTHERS PLAYERS OF THE MONTH July 2010 — Beau Hossler, Lilia Vu March 2010 — Danielle Kang, Niall Platt February 2010 — Jennifer Song, Sihwan Kim |
