![]() As one of the most fun and conveniently located municipal tracks in Los Angeles, Montebello Country Club gets its fair share of new players and has an eclectic roster of regulars. One of those regulars is Ron Perlman. The actor rose to prominence in the late 1980s when he won a Golden Globe for his work on the television series “Beauty and the Beast.” He’s acted in dozens of films and shows since then, often taking roles that require significant makeup — like that in the “Hellboy” franchise. Here, he talks about his golf game and why he loves coming to Montebello. Hellboy is one of the most unique superheroes to make it to the Silver Screen. Do you share any of his traits on the course? I swing for the fences. I’m all over the place, probably because I try to over-do everything. There’s not a lot of finesse involved in my game. I guess I share that with Hellboy, because he’s an all-or-nothing type of guy. How long have you played regularly at Montebello? A long time. I’d say since the early 1990s. That’s my default golf course. If I play three times, it’s twice there. Why do you keep coming back? There is a cornucopia of reasons. I’m a working-class guy from blue-collar roots, and Montebello is the most unpretentious, un-country-club-like setting. I’ve established a real sense of family there and become really good friends with [director of golf] Tom Camacho, who does some wonderful stuff for the East Los Angeles community. It’s a golf course with no frills — it will test your game, but if you hit an errant shot, you can still get it back in play. And they keep it beautiful. What are some of your fondest memories at Montebello? For some reason, I always play Nos. 4 and 18 — two of the toughest holes — better than any of the others. I don’t know why. They’re both very straightforward, long par 4s that set up well to my eye. I’d say 65 percent of the time I hit a drive that puts me in position to attack the pin. Some of my greatest memories are making birdies and pars on those holes. For more information: (323) 887-4565 or cityofmontebello.com/golf.htm |
