When 22-year-old Scott Travers mapped out his summer golf tournament schedule, his goal was to win one event. So far, the Lake Forest resident has captured two major tournaments that haven’t been won concurrently since World War II. First was the California State Amateur at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, the first time the storied match-play event was held in San Diego County. Travers defeated reinstated amateur Harry Rudolph III of La Jolla by a 4-and-3 margin in the 36-hole final in June. Two weeks later, Travers traveled to La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara for the SCGA Amateur. His 16-under-par total at the 72-hole stroke-play event gave him the rare pair of victories and shattered the previous tournament scoring record established by Tiger Woods at Hacienda Golf Club in 1994. “That’s a pretty cool thing I’ll be able to tell my grandkids one day — I beat one of Tiger’s records,” Travers said. What’s also pretty cool is winning two events in the same year that only three other men had previously done — Dr. Paul Hunter (1921), George Von Elm (1925) and Johnny Dawson (1942). “Being in their company makes me appreciate the accomplishment that much more,” said Travers. An upcoming senior at Santa Clara University, the 6-foot-4 men’s golf team member was recognized as the West Coast Conference Player of the Year during his junior season off the strength of nine top-10 finishes in 12 starts. Travers grew up playing at Santa Ana Country Club and plans on becoming a tour professional following graduation.
