Sheri Hayes is the lead instructor at Sycuan Resort's School of Golf Exclusively for Women in El Cajon. It's the Southland's oldest running golf school for women taught by women. "Last year we restructured the curriculum for the school and created improvements that I believe offer participants the most comprehensive program available," said Hayes, who has been teaching the game for 26 years. What's the best golf tip you've ever received? Take dead aim. No matter what, focus on getting the ball in the hole and the rest will follow. What's your favorite golf instruction book and why? "Every Shot Has a Purpose" by Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilson does an excellent job in providing tools to think well while playing. Also, "The Natural Golf Swing" by George Knudson does a great job in describing the swing in a common sense way using physics we can all understand. What's the most satisfying thing about being a golf teacher? Helping golfers improve and enjoy their game. I love to watch their excitement when they make shots they didn't think they were capable of. How old were you when you started playing golf? I took up golf in my early 20s, so I know the challenges of learning as an adult. As adults we are used to doing things with a high-level proficiency and golf does humble us. What is your favorite part of the game? Putting and pitching are areas that demand precision and creativity, especially putting because there is nothing more satisfying then hearing the ball dropping into the cup. Isn't that what it is all about - holing it out? What professional golfer would you most like to be reincarnated as and why? That would be Tiger. I see him as the most complete player mentally and physically, plus he gives back to the game through his youth foundation. That's being a complete human as well. What's your greatest achievement in golf? Helping people feel better about themselves through golf. What's your personal motto on the course? Effortless energy to the target. What words or phrase do you most overuse on the course? "Get in!" SG |
