By Christi WhittemorePublished: November, 2008

The LPGA’s teaching and club professionals recently selected the 50 best among their peers. Seven of them work, teach and play in Southern California.

“The award is quite an honor,” said Judy Carls of Huntington Beach. “For me personally, it says that all the hard work has paid off.”

Carls has been teaching golf and overseeing youth golf programs in Southern California for 18 years. A member of the Illinois Golf Coaches Hall of Fame, she teaches independently and is on the board of the Tiger Woods Learning Center.

In addition to Carls, Southland honorees include:

Dana Bates of Thousand Palms, who played on a golf scholarship at the University of Hawaii and has competed on mini tours. An instructor at La Quinta Country Club, Bates has taught for more than 20 years and was a contestant on the Golf Channel’s “Big Break Ka’anapali” earlier this year.

Beverly Fergusson of Carlsbad has been a golf instructor for more than 28 years. Currently teaching at The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe and at The Hodges Game Improvement Center in Escondido, she has won numerous golf industry awards.

Judy Furst
of Palm Desert is the head teaching professional at Tradition Golf Club and a renowned tournament player who has been involved in golf for more than 40 years. Her many honors include the LPGA’s 2007 Western Section Teacher of the Year award.

Sheri Hayes of Carlsbad has taught golf for more than 25 years. She teaches at Carlsbad Golf Center and is the lead instructor at the Sycuan School of Golf Exclusively for Women in El Cajon.

Lynn Ralston
of Los Angeles is the LPGA head professional at Westchester Golf Course, where she has taught for more than 22 years. In addition to her work with the LPGA’s certification program, Ralston has led Westchester’s Los Angeles Urban Youth and The First Tee programs.

Mardell Wilkins
of Mission Viejo had eight top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour between 1971 and 1984 and has been a teaching professional at Mission Viejo Country Club since leaving the tour. Wilkins also is the lead instructor for the LPGA’s Teaching and Club Professionals Player Development Program.
