William P. Bell and William F. Bell

If you’ve played golf in Southern California, chances are these men had a hand in the design of at least a few of your chosen courses.

BY JOEL BEERSPublished: December, 2008

William F. Bell.
Individually and together, the father and son designed more than 70 courses in the Southland, ranging from Bermuda Dunes Country Club and Newport Beach Country Club to Torrey Pines and Industry Hills Golf Club.

Their courses have hosted PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour events, along with major championships, PGA Tour qualifiers and a number of charity fund-raising events.

Los Angeles County was the breeding ground for the Bells, and their stamp dominates that county’s public golf landscape. The eight most-played public tracks are all Bell designs, including La Mirada, Los Verdes, Recreation Park, Rancho Park, Lakewood and Whittier Narrows.

Their joint career stretched from the golden age of golf design, when the elder Bell worked for George Thomas when he designed Riviera, Bel-Air and Los Angeles country clubs, through the 1970s and the construction boom in the Coachella Valley.

The elder Bell died in 1953, and his son died in 1984. But their golf courses — from exclusive country clubs to affordable municipal tracks — have stood the test of time and are as heavily played today as they were when they first opened.
