Spreading the News: Tina Mickelson

Tina Mickelson adds ‘golf ambassador’ to her resume.

By JOEL BEERSPublished: June, 2006

When Tina Mickelson isn’t talking on The Golf Channel, filming instructional videos or writing a syndicated golf column, she actually has time to play golf. Her current course is Santaluz, the centerpiece to an upscale housing community near Rancho Santa Fe.

In May, Mickelson was named a golf ambassador to the club. She will raise awareness among non-members and be an on-course teaching and host presence for members. In return, she and her fiance — they marry in September — get full privileges at the Rees Jones-designed course, clubhouse, spa and community center.

“I appeared there about six months ago at a speaking engagement for breast cancer awareness and I was very impressed with the staff, property and the members,” said Mickelson, who joins ambassadors Wally Joyner and Rolf Ber-nischke at the club.

“The level of professionalism and friendliness was so high that I walked away with a great feeling,” Mickelson said. “I felt they were going in the right direction in terms of growing the game, and I wanted to be a part of it.”

At Santaluz, Mickelson will focus on helping women and juniors through events and clinics designed to “raise awareness, especially among women, about what is expected from them on the course: why they shouldn’t be afraid to play the game, how to speed up their round, what to do if they blow up on a hole, and how to make them feel less intimidated.”

As a 15-year teaching professional, Mickelson will provide tips to all golfers and also serve as a marketing force for other properties owned by parent company DMB.

“They’ve invited me to come on board and push women’s golf at all their clubs,” Mickelson said. “It’s a real honor to have this platform because, as a PGA professional, our goal is to make your golf game better and the game of golf better, and this is one way to do that.”

As a member of a high-profile golf family — including her brother Phil — Mickelson knows what a positive influence a good golf community can have on a person’s upbringing, and she also appreciates how the exclusivity at Santaluz doesn’t include restricted tee times for men or women.

“There’s none of that [gender] separation on the course, and I like that,” she said. “But at the same time, there’s a men’s-only grill in the men’s lounge and I think that’s important. Men need a place where they can just be men, and that’s fine.

“There is a fine line between catering to your membership and being restrictive, and a club like this does a great job of making itself available to juniors and women without stepping on the toes of men.”
