The Vietnam veteran knows how military personnel feel when they return home — wounded or not — from a stint overseas. And as the father of PGA Tour professional Pat Perez, he knows a thing or two about golf. The elder Perez, who lives in San Diego and is president and founder of Pin Pals Junior Links, will host the Operation Game On Golf Classic at Morgan Run Resort in Rancho Santa Fe on August 16. Partnered with the PGA Tour’s Birdies for the Brave program, the tournament will raise funds for Operation Game On, which was started in February 2008 as a golf rehabilitation program for men and women in the service who have suffered physical or mental trauma. “The program has been well received by the staff at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and our injured troops, and has turned out to be one of the three most popular events for injured troops,” Perez said. “According to the staff at the hospital, we are making a tremendous difference for our troops by giving them the confidence to go out and play golf anytime, anywhere,” he added. Besides Operation Game On, the Little Heroes program offers children of military personnel free golf lessons each Sunday at Riverwalk Golf Club over an eight-week period. Perez has a natural tie to the program because of Pin Pals Junior Links, which he started in 2006. Pin Pals teaches golf to less privileged children primarily in the middle school age group. The goal is that by the time the children reach high school, they will be more versed in playing golf and perhaps become members of their prospective high school teams.
