Vaughn Taylor lives in Augusta, Ga. He qualified as an amateur for the 1998 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. On the PGA Tour for two years, he consistently ranks among the best in number of eagles and birdies. Here, he talks candidly about his swing fundamentals. Glenn: As you practice, what are you thinking about? Vaughn: Fundamentals — setup, alignment, and grip. Glenn: What fundamental was the most difficult for you to master? Vaughn: Probably the grip, as crazy as that sounds. It has taken me a long time to get comfortable. I had a weak grip growing up. I strengthened it in college. It seems that I’ve always tinkered with it. It gives me a little trouble here and there. I’m trying to get comfortable with it. I just keep working on it all the time. Glenn: If the recreational golfer would learn the correct grip and be consistent, how would that help their game? Vaughn: The key is getting the clubface back behind the ball in a solid position. The correct grip would help them to have better timing through impact. Glenn: Do you also work on grip pressure along with position? Vaughn: Yes. My glove hand is just slightly more firm than my right hand. Glenn: You hold your finish and have great balance. Any swing thoughts on balance that you could share with our readers? Vaughn: I have good balance if my swing is smooth, if I control my tempo. I found out that if I go after it too hard, I lose my balance. You must go to the range and discover the speed that you can control. Swinging too fast disrupts the fundamentals.
