The Torrance High School girls golf team wins its second state title.

By Eli MillerPublished: January, 2008

After a dominant three-year run, the Torrance High School girls golf team is approaching dynasty status.

In 12 postseason competitions over that span, the Tartars finished first 10 times and second twice. Two of the first-place finishes were at the California state championship, including a one-stroke triumph last November at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

"It was pretty exciting for the kids," said coach John Wurzer. "You hope for things like this."

With Pebble Beach's Robert Louis Stevenson High School posting a leading team score of 401 well before Torrance finished, most spectators thought the championship was over.

But an even-par 72 from Jane Rah and an 81 from Demi Runas in difficult conditions kept the Tartars in contention, and when Jenny Shin saved bogey on the 18th hole, Torrance finished at 400 to eke out the victory.

"When we saw [Shin] make her putt for bogey on 18, we all got up and we cheered," Runas said. "She said, 'I left it like 2 feet short [for par], why are you guys cheering so hard?'"

A talented freshman class in 2002 propelled Torrance to the top of the Ocean League, and the Tartars haven't lost a regular-season match since that time.

"People don't even believe it sometimes when we tell them," senior Jennel Alexander said of the undefeated streak.

Alexander has accepted a golf scholarship to Lamar University in Texas, but she will be the only departing player. Sophomore Rochelle Chan and junior Emily Chong will also return in 2008.

"We're definitely going to be a strong team again next year," Wurzer said.
