Hacks, Lies and Videotape

Valencia golfer determined to have the last laugh despite his new reputation of having the world’s worst swing.

By Charlie SchroederPublished: August, 2005

When Brian Weir answered his phone a few months back, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Someone from the Golf Channel was informing the Valencia resident that he had one of the 10 worst golf swings in the world.

“I thought it was a practical joke,” Weir recalled.

It wasn’t.

“He asked if I was close to a computer,” said Weir, who logged on to worldsworstswing.com and, sure enough, there he was on display with nine other duffers.

The video, which was shot and edited (with hysterical commentary) by one of Weir’s golf buddies, is a collection of terrible shots from some of their golf outings. Sandpiper, L.A. Country Club, Barton Creek — wherever Weir played, awful shots followed and his friend had the tape to prove it.

After two months of online voting and an appearance on the Golf Channel where Weir and others put their swings on display, he was crowned champion and had the dubious honor of being the world’s worst swinger.

Now the father of two has been interviewed by television and newspaper reporters and will have his swing sequence published in this month’s issue of Golf Digest, an honor normally reserved for the best in the game.

At the Golf Digest photo shoot at the TPC of Valencia, Weir (no relation to Mike ... obviously) was asked to hit into a large practice net that was patched with tape in the prime hitting zone.

“Those are compliments of Retief Goosen,” one of the crew told Weir. It seems the South African star hit the ball so hard the week before that he tore the net.

“They said, ‘let’s see what you can do,’” Weir said. “I hit 3 feet behind the ball and sent a huge piece of sod into the net where it stuck. Let’s see Retief do that!”

Chances are the 37-year-old major in the Air Force won’t be chunking too many more shots in the future. Part of his prize package are six lessons with Dean Reinmuth — one of the magazine’s Top 50 instructors in the country. The lessons with the San Diego teaching pro will air on the Golf Channel this fall.

Taking a cue from reality television, Reinmuth, who’s taught area pros Phil Mickelson and Dave Stockton Jr., said: “I will try to make a swan from an ugly duckling.”

Making over Weir’s swing might not be as difficult as it seems, considering the native Texan is an accomplished athlete who is training for a triathlon and once ran the L.A. marathon.

“I don’t want to be the comic relief,” said Weir, who has snuck in some practice time and been outfitted by Golfsmith for new clubs. “When I hit a great shot, I forget about how I sucked for the entire round. Sometimes it’s hard to let it go, but, really, life’s too short.”  N
