![]() In addition to his victory at the Nissan Open, he’s posted runner-up finishes at the Sony Open in Hawaii and the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. At just 5-feet, 10-inches and 160 pounds he’s one of the tour’s biggest hitters, averaging more than 290 yards off the tee. Glenn: How old were you when you started playing golf? Rory: I was 4 years old. My mom and dad taught me how to play. I played a lot of sports growing up and felt natural at sports. Glenn: In 1999 you were the youngest member on the PGA Tour at age 22. How old were you when you had your first professional lesson? Rory: I never had lessons until the beginning of 2000. Glenn: What are you currently working on? Rory: One area that continues to improve is my timing. When I swing with 90 percent of my power, I’ve discovered that is when my timing is best. Glenn: Anything else? Rory: Yes. When I take it up to the top of the backswing and then start it down, I want to keep it smooth and solid. I want my shaft to feel quiet during that transition. Glenn: Coming down the stretch at Riviera, what were you thinking? Rory: I tried to let the course give me what it would and I tried to play with what I have. The truth is, I don't have a very good swing. Glenn Monday is a Los Angeles-based teaching professional and author of “Know Your Swing.” He can be reached at (310) 322-8924. |
