Ranked among the top 40 players in the world since 2000, Shigeki Maruyama is the most successful Japanese golfer in PGA Tour history. In 2004, he was ranked 21st in scoring average and 17th in putting. A member at Riviera Country Club, he shot even par at age 11. Standing 5 feet, 7 inches and weighing 185, he averages 280 yards off of the tee. During our interview, he spoke in his native language through an interpreter. Glenn: What do you think about when you have to hold up under pressure? Shigeki: I stay in my routine, take some deep breaths to help my focus and then think “relax and stay cool.” Glenn: Who taught you to play? Shigeki: My father — and he still helps. Glenn: Is there a swing thought that your father gave you that you carry with you on Tour today? Shigeki: Yes. To swing all the way through. Balance is also important but swing all the way through. Glenn: How meticulous are you with the relationship between the glove hand and the club face? Shigeki: It is always the same depending on the ball flight that I hope to produce. Please let me add one more thing that I am working on: I always practice the rhythm of my swing.
