Alexander Makes Great Strides in Golf

Alexander the Great once said, “There is nothing impossible to him who will try.”

By Marcelo AraujoPublished: August, 2005

For 23-year-old Tye Alexander, that ancient wisdom can be applied to modern golf.

The path to success for Alexander, who won the 70th Pasadena City Amateur in late May at Brookside Golf Club, began in Inglewood, where he was introduced to the game by his father, Alvin Alexander.

Alexander won the Pasadena tournament with rounds of 71-64-74-69 to defeat Darren Schwartz by a stroke.

“I cannot say how proud I am of Tye,” his father said. “His manners and soft-spoken personality have made me a proud father.”

“I really felt last year I gave the tournament away,” said Alexander, who finished third in 2004. “I had to make up for early bogeys. This year I came back to solve the unfinished business.”

During his youth, Alexander dreamed of becoming a professional athlete, but striking out batters, hitting jump shots and throwing touchdown passes were on his mind more than hitting fairways and greens.

“I enjoyed being the go-to guy,” Alexander said. “In every sport I played I was the ball handler. It just seemed to be more competitive at the time.”

Alexander’s passion for golf was rekindled at Palisades High School, but a nine-year layoff affected his performance. After shooting rounds in the 90s and high 80s his junior year, Alexander worked on his game that summer, finishing second in the state championship his senior year. He graduated from Long Beach City College in 2003.

Guy Livesay, who won the Anaheim City Championship earlier this year, was one of the first people to congratulate Alexander on his victory, since Alexander congratulated him after his win in Anaheim.

“I didn’t even know Tye, but when he congratulated me on my victory, I knew he was a classy young man,” Livesay said. “He definitely worked hard on his game to win and he definitely has the game to become a highly ranked amateur.”
