Do you want 15 more yards off the tee? Are you searching for long-iron replacements? How about a fun golf book? Whatever you’re searching for to enhance your love of the links, Steve Carfano, vice president of retail for Worldwide Golf Shops, lists some of this spring’s hottest products. If you play golf regularly and you haven’t upgraded your driver in a couple of years you might consider making a change for this spring. The technology today is different internally and externally. Not only have manufacturers increased the size of most drivers to the USGA limit of 460 cubic centimeters, they have also manipulated the wall thickness in the clubface to increase ball speed on off-center hits. Additionally, manufacturers are increasing the MOI (moment of inertia, which essentially means resistance to twisting) by taking weight away from less important areas of the clubhead and redistributing that weight to the lower backside of the clubhead, giving them more stability than ever before. Here are some new spring products I suggest you check out: 1. Titanium driversThis year’s all-titanium clubhead driver models perform better when it comes to achieving optimal ball speed, spin rate and launch angle. The TaylorMade Burner, Callaway Hyper X, Mizuno MX-560, Ping G-10, Cleveland HiBore XLS, and Nike SQ Sumo 5900 and 5000 drivers are some of our best sellers.2. Composite driversThe multi-material clubhead driver models push the limits of weight distribution. By using lightweight carbon composites, manufacturers can relocate the weight to where it is needed most. The Callaway FT-I and FT- 5 drivers are our best sellers in this premium driver category.3. Fairway woodsA lot of people are hesitant to change their fairway woods, fearing the performance differences aren’t enough to justify the expense. But this is not the case. Just look at the new square shaped fairway woods from Nike and Callaway. These models push more weight to the farthest corners of the clubhead, giving you more stable shots than ever before. The Ping G-10 4-wood actually has a 3-wood length shaft, so it’s really a high lofted 3-wood designed to help players who need height to get more distance. Mizuno F-60 fairway woods have a titanium crown braised to a stainless steel face and body, a combination that lowers the center of gravity.4. HybridsIf you haven’t jumped on the hybrid bandwagon yet, you’re really missing out. These clubs are just so much easier to hit than long irons. If you are fighting a slice, you might want to look at the Cobra DWS and TaylorMade R7 Draw models. If you simply want a hybrid for those long shots into the green, check out the Adams A3 OS Boxer, Cleveland HiBore XLS, TaylorMade Burner Rescue or Ping G10. The Callaway FT Hybrid is constructed with a tungsten infused sole, placing even more weight below the center of the ball. If you have advanced control of your trajectory and are looking to minimize hooks, you might want to look at either the TaylorMade Rescue TP or Adams Idea Pro models.5. Super game-improvement ironsMost of these iron sets are now made up with 3-4-5 hybrid woods in place of the long irons. The Adams A3 OS model is a prime example of clubs combined from two different categories to make up an ultra-forgiving iron set.6. Performance game-improvement ironsThese irons are designed for golfers looking for forgiveness and workability. Some of the new models are the Callaway X20, Ping G10, TaylorMade Burner XD and Cleveland CG Gold.7. Golf bagsNew golf bags are lighter, more colorful and have more features than your old bag. Check out the Ogio Grom lightweight carry bag, one of our best dual-purpose bags for those who enjoy walking and driving the links. It features a zipperless ball pocket and eight other pockets perfect for valuables, sunglasses, a water bottle and other essentials.8. Golf ballsThe Titleist Pro V1 golf balls are by far the best-selling balls in the shop, but if you are looking for the latest technology in aerodynamics, feel and control, you may want to try out a box of Callaway Tour ix or Nike ONE Platinum high-performance golf balls.9. Golf shoesThe new Adidas Tour 360 LTD shoes are simply amazing. They look handmade and feature “THiNTech” low-profile technology. This lowers your center of gravity by bringing you closer to the ground than ever before for better shot making. They are also extremely comfortable.10. Books“The Match” is about the greatest private match ever played. It was 1956 and Eddie Lowery, who was once the 10-year-old caddie to 1913 U.S. Open champion Francis Ouimet, challenges millionaire George Coleman to a match. Lowery claims he has two amateur golfers who can beat any two professional golfers in the world. Coleman accepts the challenge and shows up with Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. Lowery shows up with amateurs Ken Venturi and Harvie Ward. This is a true story — once you pick it up, you won’t want to put it down. |
