Home Away from Home

Morgan Run Resort & Club offers its guests a cozy ambience — along with 27 holes of top-notch golf.

BY CYNTHIA DIAZPublished: January, 2007

Nestled in a small coastal valley at the beginning of the equestrian community of Rancho Santa Fe, Morgan Run Resort & Club has been the go-to crash pad for business travelers weary of bland, big-chain hotels and leisure travelers drawn to local attractions such as the Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds. Guests of the boutique hotel can enjoy a respite or short vacation getaway at a fair price, and let out their stress on some of the resort’s 27 holes or 11 tennis courts.

“It’s close to everything, yet you feel like you’re away,” said general manager Jim MacDonough. “And the beach is just three miles away.”

Morgan Run’s reputation as an elegant-yet-casual, clubby-yet-friendly property remains as solid as ever as the resort begins an expansion and remodeling program aimed at providing improved services and appealing to more families.

Under construction at Morgan Run is The Retreat, a 16,000-square-foot spa and fitness center that will give club members and hotel guests access to the latest techniques in therapeutic massage, special body treatments and other services, along with weight-training equipment and exercise programs such as yoga and Pilates in separate studios.

Upgrades also are coming to the swim center in the form of a four-lane lap pool with wade-in entry. Director of operations Pete Lassalette said new men’s and women’s locker rooms with flat-screen TVs, a members’ lounge, grill and small retail boutique in the lobby are on the drawing board, along with a play area for children.

Several suites have been upgraded in recent years and a few more scheduled this year will pattern Morgan Run’s traditional look featuring mahogany furniture. The resort has 66 rooms, making for a cozy ambience. Guest rooms have private patios or balconies with expansive views of the palm tree-studded golf course and valley grassland. The rooms offer mini fridges and fireplaces, ensuring a home-away-from-home experience.

The golf course, designed by Jay Morrish, is a 27-hole beauty that has served as host of the Toyota Celebrity Classic since the tournament’s inception in 1999.

The resort offers several stay-and-play packages. The off-season pricing offers the best value, said sales coordinator Erin Fleischer.

“During the summer, we’re completely booked with the Del Mar races and the fair,” she said.  SG
