Let your Spirit Soar

The Resort at Red Hawk is a natural beauty that offers solitude for guests on the outskirts of Reno.

By AL PETERSENPublished: March, 2007

It’s always nice to feel at home on the road. If that road leads to the Reno-Sparks area of Nevada, The Resort at Red Hawk has all the comforts a traveler could need.

Since breaking ground in 1995, the Wingfield Springs master-planned golf community has 2,200 homes on 1,600 acres of breathtaking topography that includes lakes, wetlands, native flora, rugged hillsides and mountain views. The resort, which has nine villas ranging from 600 to 2,600 square feet for visitors, is only 20 minutes from the bustle of downtown Reno, but the tranquility of the rustic setting will have visitors feeling like they’re millions of miles away from hectic city life.

“When we came out we wanted to couple the big sky and natural beauty and maintain what this property is all about,” said assistant general manager Scott Whittemore. “We wanted the developers to work with the landscape and let the wetlands and other natural features dictate how the development was going to proceed.”

For golfers, the Lakes Course and Hills Course at The Resort at Red Hawk are good examples of that philosophy, with both layouts snaking through wetlands and cottonwoods and skirting the edges of lakes and springs on the former Wingfield Ranch.

The public Lakes Course, which opened in 1997, embraces the lay of the land and shows a commitment to the environment, with the Robert Trent Jones Jr. design achieving the status of Nevada’s first Audubon International Signature Sanctuary.

At 7,140 yards from the back tees, the par-72 course has plenty of brawn, but three other sets of tees ranging from 5,115 to 6,653 yards will help players keep the ball in the fairway and avoid the 104 bunkers that dot the landscape.

“The Lakes is a traditional-type golf course with par-5s that give players scoring options and par-3s that are really tough,” said Greg Enholm, head professional at The Resort at Red Hawk. “It’s a good test of golf, and with water on 13 holes, there’s a visual aspect that can affect how you play a shot.”

The private Hills Course, which was designed by Hale Irwin and opened in 2002, is available to the public and resort guests on a limited basis. It also has length from the back tees, but the wide fairways make the 7,106-yard layout playable for all skill levels. But that doesn’t make the par-71 course, which has four other teeing options ranging from 4,980 to 6,695 yards, easy because of its sloping terrain, smallish greens and steep-face and pot bunkers filled with white crushed marble.

The Hills Course is, however, an exhilarating trek because of elevation changes and long views of the Pah Pah Mountains and Spanish Springs Valley.

“It seems odd to say that the Hills is a links-style course because of the hills, but it has that feel,” Enholm said. “It’s nice having courses with different styles. Both get high local rankings every year.”

Adding to the resort’s charm are dining options, such as the casual David’s Grill and Sports Bar, which has the feel of an upscale guy’s hangout, and The Steakhouse at Red Hawk, where intimacy is weaved into the elegant ranch decor. The resort’s Swim and Fitness Center is a great place to relax or get in a workout, and mountain bikes are available for people who want a closer look at the hillsides and natural trails.

“You can easily get away to Reno if that’s in the plans, but when you’re on this property or out on the golf courses, it’s just you and the birds,” Whittemore said. “People love the serenity. And we’re proud of the accolades we’ve received and think that we’re a great golf and resort destination for people looking for what we have to offer.”  SG
