Spring into action

When the snow melts in the Sierra Nevadas and the skis have been put away, it’s time for golf — and Lake Tahoe Golf Course is a great place to get started.

Scenic backdrops abound at Lake Tahoe Golf Course.
I’m a big fan of the ski slopes in Lake Tahoe. Give me a cabin in the mountains, fresh snow and a few gallons of hot chocolate by a fireplace and I’m in a winter wonderland.

But as the snow melts and the grass turns green, golf takes over the landscape, and a great place to visit is Lake Tahoe Golf Course. The 6,741-yard layout on the South Shore takes picturesque views to new heights thanks to the Sierra Nevadas in the background, while the course features towering pines, rivers, streams and marshes that add tranquility to the experience.

The front nine is mostly flat and open, with holes 3, 4 and 5 providing a break from the many water hazards on the course. The sixth hole is a great 185-yard par 3 with a river running in front of the green, and No. 9 provides a nice risk-reward opportunity, as the 561-yard par 5 is divided by more water.

The back nine is a visual treat, with No. 10 — a 391-yard par 4 that doglegs to the right — offering mountain views and a lake on the left side of the fairway.

Other notable holes include No. 14, a 390-yard par 4 with a lake; No. 15, a 289-yard par 4 that requires a well-struck tee shot; and No. 17, a 150-yard, par 3 that requires a tee shot over water.

The course is close to some of the Lake Tahoe area’s great amenities, including the nightlife and casinos at stateline, and outdoor activities like hiking and fishing.
