Simple pleasures

There’s plenty to do during a stay at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, but relaxing by the surf after a round might be the best option.

By Rob LyonPublished: June, 2008

Enjoying the beach is the ultimate in relaxation. Grab a chair, towel, sunscreen and an umbrella and watch the waves go by.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club has been specializing in that form of recreation since 1927. Now in its fourth generation of family ownership, the 90-room resort on 14 acres offers plenty to keep guests occupied, from 12 tennis courts and a par-3 golf course to one of San Diego County’s most acclaimed restaurants, the Marine Room.

But the real star of the show is the Pacific Ocean. Each day at 8 a.m., the resort’s staff prepares the private beach by grooming the sand and setting things up so guests can enjoy a day of frolicking in the surf or lounging in the sun.

The staff can also help with a private beach party, where guests either bring and cook their food on a grill or get the menu items delivered.

“From firing it and grilling it yourself for a romantic evening, to having catered group for a small party on the beach, there are plenty of options,” said Sara DeYoung, marketing and communications director.

It’s a glorious way to wrap up whatever your day entailed. “Your day can be as full as you want it to be or as relaxed as you want,” DeYoung said.

The resort also is known for its tennis facilities. Four USTA national championships are played at the site each year, and the club also played host to the first round of the Davis Cup in 2006. Tennis greats such as Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe all competed at the resort before turning professional.

Guests can play for free on the 12 courts, seven of which are lighted. There is a nominal fee for the nine-hole, par-3 course but all other recreational activities are complimentary.

The resort is next to the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park, and several nearby businesses rent kayak, snorkeling and scuba gear. Surfing lessons and hiking, biking and kayaking tours also are easily accessible.

The resort combines Mayan architecture with modern amenities, such as kitchens and flat-screen TVs. Fifty-one of the 55 suites have ocean views, as do six hotel rooms and one of the cottages.

Three restaurants are on property, with the Marine Room heading the list. Since opening in 1941, the fine-dining restaurant has won numerous awards and ranks among the most romantic in Southern California, thanks to its ocean views. Executive chef Bernard Guillas, who oversees all three restaurants, is a classically trained French chef who has worked at restaurants from French Guiana to Washington, D.C.

The other restaurants are the Club Dining Room and the Shores, a steak and seafood restaurant next door at the resort’s sister property, the La Jolla Shores Hotel, which includes 128 rooms and is geared more for corporate meetings.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is ideally situated near many of the surrounding area’s top attractions. Three exceptional golf properties — Torrey Pines, Four Seasons Resort Aviara and La Costa — are within a 20-minute drive. The Stephen Birch Aquarium and the village of La Jolla, with its excellent restaurants and boutique shops, also are nearby, as are downtown San Diego, Sea World, the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Wild Animal Park.

Though plenty of temptations exist off the property, no one will blame you if you spend most of your time with your toes in the sand and your eyes on the lookout for seals and dolphins cavorting in the ocean. Even aquatic mammals are drawn to the simple things in life. SG
