![]() Access to five of the top courses in the Coachella Valley and great accommodations make the La Quinta Resort & Spa one of the best resorts in this golf-lover’s paradise. But even though I visit as often as possible, and have learned that the resort is ideal for anything from a group golf excursion to a romantic getaway, I discovered this summer that it’s also a great place for a family vacation. For the first time, my wife and I took our 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter along on our seasonal resort visit. We weren’t sure what to expect. Our kids are curious and energetic, so staying in an air-conditioned room in front of the television set wasn’t going to cut it. Fortunately, there are plenty of activities for children, including some family time at the Spa of La Quinta. The 23,000-square-foot facility is renowned for its services, which include 16 types of massages and an array of traditional and exotic skin, body and facial treatments. But teens and pre-teens also can enjoy a little pampering now, with services ranging from papaya and pineapple body scrubs to facials designed to fight acne-causing bacteria. My son, A.J., and I traversed Pete Dye’s Mountain Course, and then afterward enjoyed relaxation time at the spa. I went with the deep tissue sports massage while my son tried out the orange and cream massage and a pre-teen facial. I haven’t seen his face that happy since I bought him a set of Pokemon cards. Meanwhile, my wife, Laura, and our daughter, Katie, sampled some of the area shopping malls. Other children-friendly features during the summer include dive-in movie nights, where a film can be seen on a big-screen TV while never leaving the pool; rubber duck derbies; and Camp La Quinta, which offers supervised programs for children ages 4 and older. There are also golf and tennis lessons for all ages, as well as bicycle rentals. Besides the Mountain Course, which challenges players on every shot, the resort has another Dye layout on the property: the links-style Dunes Course. The resort is next to the PGA West complex, which includes three courses available for resort play: the Greg Norman Course, Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and Stadium West, which plays host to the finals of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. In an attempt to make the area even more amenable to families who visit, La Quinta Resort & Spa is working on plans for a water park on the property, which I’m sure would be a big splash.
