Safe bets

Refurbished golf courses and hot deals are two of the benefits currently available to Las Vegas visitors.

You don’t have to roll the dice to have a great golf experience in Las Vegas.

Some of the top courses in Sin City have heavenly deals or recently-completed renovation projects to make rounds at the facilities more enjoyable. Here are a few:

For the next two months, golfers can pay $375 to enjoy one round at each of these renowned Las Vegas courses.

“During December and January you are going to get the best deals possible,” said Josh Hill, director of marketing for Bali Hai, Desert Pines and Royal Links golf clubs. “It’s the ideal time to visit and experience golf in Las Vegas.”

The offer is especially alluring because a round at Bali Hai Golf Club — voted No. 6 on GolfWorld’s Top 50 Public Courses in the U.S. — reaches $295 during peak season. The scenic fairways are punctuated with palm trees, Augusta white-sand bunkers, black volcanic rock outcroppings and blue lagoons.

When done, be sure to check out Cili Restaurant for contemporary American dishes with Asian influences. It’s one of the hottest lunch spots on the Strip, but Bali Hai golfers are guaranteed a seat.

“It’s a fine-dining experience like no other on a golf course,” Hill said. “It’s where you’ll find the ‘who’s who’ of Vegas at lunch time.”

Desert Pines Golf Club replaced all of its greens with bentgrass two years ago and “there’s not a blade out of place,” said Jim Anderson, the facility’s director of golf.

“The entire golf course is in excellent condition from tee to green,” he said. “The greens provide a tour-quality feel and a roll that’s real special to us.”

Golfers also are drawn to Desert Pines’ climate-controlled driving range that stays lighted until 11 p.m.

For an old-school experience, head to Royal Links Golf Club. Every hole is inspired by famous tests at British Open courses, such as St. Andrews’ Road Hole.

Upon request, golfers can book a caddie for their round through the exclusive ParMates program.

Extensive landscape renovations have enhanced the desert playing experience at these two courses.

Siena, named 2009 Nevada Course of the Year by the Nevada Golf Course Owners Association, has been lauded for its conservation efforts. Large expanses of grass have been replaced with plants and hardscape that require less maintenance and reflect the natural surroundings.

The semi-private Arroyo Golf Club at Red Rock, just a three-mile drive from Siena, also went through changes recently.

“We’ve carved out a traditional desert experience that really defines the fairways,” said Troy Anderson, director of marketing for the two courses. “It’s tightened up the look of the golf courses, and allowed us to cut down on how much water we use.”

Golfers can see the changes with early bird, twilight and pre-twilight rates offered through mid-January. Pre-twilight begins one hour before the scheduled twilight time and offers a guaranteed finish. Also, a two-day pass is available for golfers wishing to play at least two rounds at the courses with savings of up to 20 percent.
