Looking Good

Landscaping at both Angel Park and Legacy gives the courses a new feel.

New landscaping at two of Las Vegas' better golf courses has translated into dramatic changes for the better.

"Although the primary purpose was water conservation, this aesthetic enhancement has provided both clubs with an entirely new look and feel," said Kris Strauss, director of sales and marketing for OB Sports, which manages Angel Park Golf Club and The Legacy Golf Club.

Angel Park has converted about 25 percent of its turf, mostly in out-of-play areas. But though the playing corridors aren't impacted, Strauss said pace of play might be improved since golfers won't have to look for balls hidden in grass any longer.

"Plus, lucky golfers may benefit from favorable bounces or kicks back into the turf areas as many of the newly converted areas are sloped back toward the fairways," Strauss said.

Increased water costs and the overall shortage of water in southern Nevada makes "it even more important for courses in this region to conserve," Strauss said. When the Arnold Palmer-designed Angel Park opened in 1990, land was plentiful, water was cheap and the trend was to have plenty of turf in playing corridors and out-of-play areas.

"Today, courses in desert climates are generally built with 90 acres of turf, but Angel Park and Legacy Golf Club were built prior to this practice," Strauss said. "Now that we are in a drought and water prices have skyrocketed, it only makes sense to remove some of the out-of-the-way turf that isn't in play."

Both courses converted the turf in conjunction with the Southern Nevada Water Authority, which stipulates that drought-resistant plants and trees be planted in the affected areas. Thus far, 26 out of the area's 50 courses have participated in the program.
