The Price is Right: San Diego

San Diego County resorts offer some great stay-and-plays for golfing getaways.

By CYNTHIA DIAZPublished: July, 2006

Look no further than sunny San Diego County for adventurous, but affordable, stay-and-play golf packages, particularly when you schedule a mid-week retreat (wink, wink). Try as you might, you can’t beat the combination of golf, amenities and ambience found at these backcountry getaways when you’re looking for a change of scenery and a fun yet challenging round. And with some great package pricing, your boss won’t question your expense account, nor your spouse the household checking account. Most rates are based on a two-person stay, so save more by taking the spouse or a golf buddy (sorry, boss).

Pala Mesa Resort
(760) 728-5881 • www.palamesa.com

THE DEALS: Golf to your heart’s content when you stay Sunday through Thursday at Pala Mesa. The resort’s Unlimited Golf Package ($278 based on double-occupancy in a deluxe room) lets you get on the course after 11 a.m. on check-in day and play your heart out all day the next day. You can also take in a complimentary golf clinic.

The Midweek Ultimate Golf Getaway at $798 gives you a deluxe room for three nights, four days of unlimited golf, breakfast every morning in the restaurant and lunch at the snack bar. The Taste of Pala Mesa package at $498 offers two nights in a deluxe room, dinner for two and breakfast, a round of golf, and lunch at the snack bar.

THE COURSE: The par-72 golf course, considered one of the top 10 in San Diego County, runs long and flat on the front nine before elevation changes kick in on the back nine nestled in the rolling hills of Fallbrook and peppered with old oaks, sycamores and elms.

THE AMENITIES: Recover from your round at the resort’s fine-dining restaurant Aqua Terra, which boasts a broad sushi menu featuring traditional favorites and specialties like the Caterpillar (crab, cucumber, along with fresh water eel, avocado, spicy eel). And they make a great steak here, too.

Temecula Creek Inn
(951) 694-1000 • www.jcresorts.com

THE DEALS: This charming boutique resort is well worth the drive to Riverside County’s southernmost tip. Tucked just beyond the beaten path, you’ll gratefully breathe in rustic ambience like a fish gulps water. Stay-and-play packages starting from $298 (again, based on double-occupancy) include a deluxe room and one “play option” per person for each night’s stay. Options are an 18-hole round on the resort’s 27-hole golf course (along with golf cart and complimentary range balls), or a one hour in-room massage. Another $100 upgrades you to dinner on the day of arrival, breakfast and dinner on continuing days of your stay and breakfast on the day of departure.

THE COURSE: The three nine-hole courses offer variety and challenge for all skill levels, with dramatic elevation changes, rock outcroppings and bunkers that call for precise and accurate shots on some holes.

THE AMENITIES: Luxury and nature jibe harmoniously here, as rooms feature plush beds and private balconies or patios, most with mountain and course views. Mountain lodge retreat is the vibe in the lounge and fine-dining restaurant, which are decorated with local Native American artifacts.

Warner Springs Ranch
(760) 782-4270 • warnerpsrings.com

THE DEALS:  Looking to get far above the madding crowds? Take in the head-clearing views at Warner Springs Ranch, nestled in north county’s gorgeous mountains.

“Non-golfing spouses and guests will have plenty of great recreational options as well,” says director of golf Greg Prudham.

Warner Springs’ slew of amenities go a long way with its Unlimited Golf Package, which runs $89 per person (double-occupancy) and $119 (single-occupancy). Fees cover a one-night stay, unlimited golf with cart, and unlimited range balls. The special is available Monday through Thursday and on select weekends.

THE GOLF: Playing David Rainville’s par-72, 6,892-yard design puts you at 3,300 feet above sea level — beyond the reach of the urban hustle-and-bustle.

THE AMENITIES: The 2,500-acre ranch offers 234 Early California-style casitas, nearly all of which offer wood-burning fireplaces. The facility includes a full-service spa, two restaurants, tennis courts, an equestrian center and a hot mineral springs pool.

Rancho Bernardo Inn
(858) 675-8500 • jcresorts.com

THE DEALS: One of the most appealing aspects of the stay-and-play packages at Rancho Bernardo Inn is the opportunity to get in a round at another course. JC Resorts, operator of Rancho Bernardo, looks to cater to the repeat customer by offering privileges at other area courses it runs. On the list are Temecula Creek Inn, Twin Oaks, Oaks North, Encinitas Ranch, Mt. Woodson, Arrowood and Reidy Creek.

Among the stay-and-play packages are The Players Getaway ($223 per person, per night for three nights or more), which gives you a round of golf for each night stayed at either the Resort Course or the resort’s Oaks North Executive Course, plus the option to play a round at Torrey Pines Golf Course or Maderas Golf Club.

Another package (from $345 per night) awards both the golfer and non-golfing companion with options for a round of golf, a massage or a tennis clinic.

THE GOLF: The 6,631-yard Resort Course, opened more than 40 years ago, was renovated to challenge today’s golfers and has served as host to both PGA and LPGA events. Elevated and tiered greens test skill and patience.

THE AMENITIES: Another draw is the resort itself, or rather, how you feel when you’re there — in a word, relaxed. Lush gardens create a tranquil setting at this suburban retreat, while a full-service spa offers a broad menu of treatments all aimed at rejuvenation. So even if your golf game happens to go south, you may find yourself not minding much.

The Welk Resort
(760) 749-3225 • www.welkresort.com

THE DEALS: If you like your golf mixed with a variety of musical entertainment, you’ll enjoy getting away to this vacation-ownership property that boasts two 18-hole golf courses and a live theater that stages Broadway-style performances.

The Mid-Week Golf Break includes two nights and three days of unlimited golf with a cart on the Fountains or the Oaks courses, along with breakfast and dinner.

The Broadway Special and the Golf and Theater Jubilee packages add a dinner or lunch buffet and theater performance.

THE GOLF: Lined with ancient oaks that frame scenic fairways, the courses promise a relaxed and enjoyable golf experience. The Fountains course measures 4,000 yards consisting of par 3s and 4s and is conducive to all skill levels. The Oaks is a par-3 course that’s ideal for beginners and those who want to work on their short game.

THE AMENITIES: Still, there’s more to take in at the Welk, including fine dining at the new Canyon Grille Restaurant and multiple swimming pools, along with a 140-foot water slide and splash pads for you and the kids.
