Feel like a pro in Scottsdale

Plus, other attractions besides golf in the Scottsdale area.

BY AL PETERSENPublished: February, 2009

Grayhawk is a test for amateurs and pros.
The rowdiest stop on the PGA Tour annually rolls into Scottsdale for the FBR Open at TPC Scottsdale.

If you can’t attend the party, you can still play the course that attracts all the attention, particularly at the 162-yard 16th hole where even tour pros take a deep breath before teeing off.

But even if the Stadium Course is out of your league, the property has another option — the Champions Course — that opened in 2007.

“It’s been very well received, particularly by local players,” Marketing Director Tiffany Nelson said. “It’s a less-expensive course that lives up to TPC’s standards.”

Another facility in Scottsdale that meets the criteria for professional play is Grayhawk Golf Club, which hosts the PGA Tour’s Fry’s.com Open and was the site for three WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship events in the 1990s.

Grayhawk’s Raptor Course, which opened in 1995, is the site of most of the tournaments, but the Talon Course, which opened a year earlier, is perhaps the more scenic of the two.

“Clearly, the power of the PGA Tour brand is, in the world of golf, very highly recognized,” Grayhawk PGA General Manager Joe Shershenovich said. “It means the top players like to play the top facilities, or championship facilities, so to have that brand associated with ours is pretty meaningful and pretty special.”

Other things to see and do

• If you’re fascinated by the desert landscape and the quirky and colorful things that pop out of the ground, a ride with a guide from Roadrunner Desert Adventures is for you. If nothing else, you’ll be awestruck by the power and climbing ability of the Classic Hummer H1 on one of your three tour options — Wilderness, Rough Rider or Mountain Vista. There’s a two-passenger minimum, and the guide will pick you up at your hotel or residence. The tours are 365 days a year and last from four to seven hours. (480) 213-9428 or visit roadrunnerdesertadventures.com.

• People who sing in the shower or car but are afraid to belt out a tune in front of strangers will find comfort at Geisha A Go Go, a Scottsdale club with private karaoke rooms where visitors can let loose in front of family and friends.
But even if you don’t want to sing the night away, the club also has a lounge and restaurant that features Hot Rock cooking and a selection of Asian beers, cocktails and sake. (480) 699-0055 or visit geishaagogo.com.

• The temperature in Scottsdale sizzles in the spring and summer, but it’s always sizzling inside Mastro’s Steakhouse, where the dining experience includes refined service, prime steaks and fresh seafood. There’s also a piano bar and live music. (480) 585-9500 or visit mastrosrestaurants.com.

• Greasewood Flat has been serving burgers, beer and libations to cowboys, bikers, locals and tourists at their outdoor picnic area for more than 30 years. It’s nothing fancy, but you’ve got to let loose sometime during your trip, right? (480) 585-7277 or visit greasewoodflat.net.

• A fitting end — or beginning — to a golfer’s trip to  Scottsdale should include a stop at the Hot Stix Performance Center at Legend Trail Golf Club, Grayhawk Golf Club or its new facility at 14825 North 82nd Street. The state-of-the-art site is something to behold, and even golfers who simply want to learn more about their clubs or the process involved in fitting or manufacturing will be amazed with the technological ingenuity involved.
