![]() Ott and her husband, Randy, built a successful wholesale import business while raising a daughter and enjoying their Southern California lifestyle. They belonged to Valencia Country Club, and while her handicap was high, Anna loved the game and relished sharing it with her husband, who died of a heart attack in 2003. “I had mentioned opening a clothing store to my husband years ago,” she said. “When he passed away, I thought life’s too short, don’t wait until tomorrow.” Ott opened Bellasport in 2005 in Valencia’s Town Center. Her approach to creating a pro shop environment was so successful that it paved the way for Uomo Sport, a men’s golf apparel shop, which opened last year. “I love to see men in nice clothes with a clean look of sophistication,” Ott said. “They look like they can conquer the world.” While there are two storefronts, Uomo Sport and Bellasport combine into an 1,800-square-foot venue. Ott has created her own brand, and in an economy that’s on a downturn, her stores are holding their own. Sales have more than doubled since Bellasport first opened. “I saw a need for the stores, and they’ve really taken off,” she said. The shops are warm and inviting, punctuated with bright colors and dark wood furnishings. Accessories spruce up the space to offer a look that’s more Neiman Marcus than golf store chain. Customers come from as far away as Laguna Beach and Ventura. So far, the secret to success, Ott said, has been carrying high-end brands such as Byron Nelson, Polo Ralph Lauren and Bobby Jones for the men, and Verdina and Liz Golf for the women. It also doesn’t hurt that Ott has a keen eye for what looks good on and off the course. “If you don’t look good, I’d rather not make the sale,” she said. “Men are really into style and looking good, and it’s exciting for me knowing they will look their best on or off the course.” Last year, Ott launched websites for each store. This has allowed customers to shop online for exclusive apparel such as Nick Price’s Cool-Luxe high-performance polo and Janie Sadock’s capris and sweaters. While much of her time is spent at the store, Ott still has time for community service. She’s involved in charitable golf tournaments and will take the reins as the first female president of the local Boys & Girls Club Foundation next year. “It’s about being part of your community and making it the best place to live in,” Ott said. “I love Santa Clarita, so when I see a need, especially with kids, I want to help in any way I can.” For more information, visit uomosport.com and bellasport.com. |
