Oak Valley Golf Club

Beaumont is not typically thought of as a prime golf destination, but a visit to Oak Valley Golf Club proves otherwise.

By Southland Golf MagazinePublished: February, 2008

Located at the intersection of the 60 and 10 freeways between Riverside and Palm Springs, Oak Valley opened in 1991 and has matured nicely. It has gained a level of national attention through hosting events like the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School.

The facility has a minimalist clubhouse, with a quaint golf shop and dining room.

The double-sided range has multiple targets and an all-grass hitting area – the bottom half is for regular patrons, while the top half is for the Oak Valley Golf Academy, which hosts some of the top players from the United States and Asia. The range also has lights, allowing you to work on your game following a late afternoon round.

The Lee Schmidt/Brian Curley design, sporting four sets of tees and playing 7,003 yards from the tips, is a fair, memorable test set against the backdrops of the San Gorgonio and San Jacinto mountains. Oak Valley’s fairways are lush, and the subtle breaks on the greens make putting more fun and less adventurous than some other Southland tracks.

The front nine offers mostly straightforward golf. The 185-yard third hole, which is the first in a group of magnificent par 3s, features a picturesque view from a raised tee box.

The toughest hole at Oak Valley is the par-4 seventh. It traditionally plays into a prevailing wind and can stretch 475 yards from the back tee. The fairway offers a generous landing area, but make sure you’re focused for the long approach to an elevated green.

At 349 yards, No. 10 is one of a few holes on the back where using driver may not be the best option – hit a club off the tee that will give you the best chance of finding the fairway while also setting up a comfortable approach yardage to a tricky putting surface.

The 199-yard par-3 11th is one of the prettiest at Oak Valley. A deep bunker protects the left side of the green, and water on the right readily engulfs errant shots. Railroad ties border the hazard, giving the hole some rustic appeal.

The 493-yard, par-5 16th hole has a brilliant risk-reward element. A slightly downhill tee shot gives players extra length off the tee, which sets up an approach to a shallow green guarded by a lake. Native vegetation is visible right of the green and behind the putting surface, so the best play for the weak of heart is to lay up short and right to set up a simple pitch for a chance at birdie.

A cozy and affordable Holiday Inn Express recently opened next to Oak Valley, and stay-and-play packages are available.

Plans are also in the works for a shopping center between the hotel and the course.

Green fees are $60 on weekdays and $80 on weekends. A special loyalty club membership is also available.
