The facility has beamed ceilings, fireplaces and vibrant color. The cuisine is just as inviting. Whether it’s the grilled center cut pork loin with apple-mango chutney, the Cioppino in a spicy tomato broth or a nice spring vegetable paella with saffron rice, there’s something for all tastes. Don’t miss the homemade seasoned potato chips with whole-grain mustard and blue cheese dip or the fried calamari while you listen to the lodge’s jazz band on Friday and Saturday nights. The resort’s sunset jazz series runs Fridays from 6 to 8 p.m. June 24-July 29. The courtyard setting offers theater-type seating as well as seating around cocktail tables where beverages, specialty wines and snacks are served. There also is a four-course dinner option with direct views of the stage. Special hotel packages start at $525 per room per night and includes overnight accommodations, tickets to the jazz concert series, dinner and a jazz CD. A limited number of concert tickets are available to the general public for $55 per person, or you can buy the series of five concerts for $220. Reservations are required. The menu is simple but sufficient, and diners can choose from the basics to fresh fish and steaks. The atmosphere is California casual, where just about everything goes except wearing bathing suits and tank tops. San Luis Rey Downs is north San Diego County’s answer to Cheers. The show caters more to the 55-and-older crowd as Wright takes the audience through memories from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.
