Being Creative Around the Green Will Save Strokes

How do you decide what club to use when playing around the green?

Ailment: I just joined a club where there are tight, mounded areas around the greens. This allows me to putt or use a fairway wood from off the green. My playing partners give me a hard time for not chipping or using a more lofted club in these situations. How do you decide what club to use from off the green?

Prescription: The first thing to remember is that golf is an individual game. In order to play your best, you need to play the shots you’re comfortable with and have brought you success.

My next piece of advice would be to identify your weaknesses and work on them. You need to work on other types of shots in practice. When you feel comfortable playing them on the course, you can add them to your arsenal of shots.

Divide your practice time into two parts. The first is continuing to improve on what you’re doing. The second involves experimenting with shots you might only play once in a while. This will make you a more well-rounded player.
