Get the most out of your clubs with a proper fit.

By Jerry ElwellPublished: January, 2005

At a recent teaching summit, I shared statistical examples of golfers I have fit with clubs and balls at the Max Out Golf Lab. The playing ability of the participants ranged from high-handicappers to tour-level players. After the fitting, the average distance increased by 39 yards — ranging from 14 yards to a whopping 80-yard increase.

During a fitting session, five areas are covered: driver loft, shaft flex, club length, shaft weight and quality of shaft along with ball spin.

The key to greater distance with the driver is a high launch angle and a low spin rate. You want to create the maximum amount of carry coupled with the maximum amount of roll once the ball hits the ground.

Vijay Singh played all of 2004 with a 10.5-degree driver. So did Hank Kuehne, who is the longest driver on the PGA Tour. Back in the days of persimmon woods, when everyone was using an 11-degree driver, Ben Hogan used a 12-degree driver.

It’s something to think about.

Next month: Driver length.
