Leaving Las Vegas?

More and more buyers are calling the desert oasis home.

By Cynthia DiazPublished: April, 2005

We all know by now that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. But a growing number of us are intrigued by the idea of creating a memorable lifestyle off the Strip as a homeowner at any of several sparkling-new residential communities springing up beyond Glitter Gulch. You’ll find homes aplenty out here, as big-name builders battle for buyers seeking value and volume. Here’s a look at a few:

Tuscany by Rhodes Homes
The links: Ted Robinson Jr. designed the 18-hole Tuscany Golf Course to be friendly to novices but still put up a fight for low-handicappers. The public course is the centerpiece of this upscale, guard-gated community in the southwest valley city of Henderson.

The homes: Six floor plans range from 2,017 to 4,183 square feet and offer two to five bedrooms. Charming Old World architectural design features abound, including rotundas, turrets and courtyards. And there’s a seemingly endless array of special-purpose rooms and areas from which to choose, such as tech centers, master retreats, lofts, sunrooms, libraries, decks, sitting rooms, studies, balconies, dens, bonus rooms and great rooms. You won’t find this much variety outside the buffet at Caesar’s Palace.

The buzz: Rhodes goes one better on the popular Italian Tuscany design concept by developing the community as a residential golf village, complete with a clock tower, a bell tower and a 34,000-square-foot recreation center that’ll beat as the heart of village life.

Rhodes Ranch by Rhodes Homes
The links: The Ted Robinson Jr.-designed Rhodes Ranch Country Club in Henderson has matured over the last seven years to become one of the best golfing experiences the Las Vegas Valley has to offer, with varying elevations and rolling fairways at the base of the Spring Mountains.

The homes: Rhodes is building everything in its 1,375-acre, master-planned community, so there’s lots of neighborhoods from which to choose, the newest being The Collection featuring homes either on the golf course, next to The Fun Zone entertainment area or on cul-de-sacs. The single- and two-story floor plans run from 1,467 to 3,042 square feet.

The buzz: There’s little chance of the kids saying they’re bored, given the multitude of activities available, including a 34,000-square-foot recreation center, The Fun Zone’s water park, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, tennis courts and walking and jogging paths.

Toll Brothers at Red Rock Country Club
The links: Red Rock Country Club in Summerlin boasts a private course and a daily-fee course, both designed by Arnold Palmer and nestled at the foothills of the spectacular Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Canyons with 100-foot drops, lakes, waterfalls and natural streams highlight the courses.

The homes: Nearly every home offers golf or mountain views in this guard-gated, golf-resort community featuring lifestyle amenities, including swimming pools, spa and fitness center, tennis courts and hiking and biking trails. Floor plans roughly range from 2,512 to 4,185 square feet with loads of architectural details and outdoor-living features such as courtyards. Pricing runs from the low $700,000s into the $800,000s.

The buzz: Toll gives plenty of space for buyers to install a backyard or side-yard putting green for privately taming those pesky yips, entertaining friends or grooming the budding Tiger Woodses and Michelle Wies in the family.

Toll Brothers at MacDonald Highlands
The links: DragonRidge Golf Club in Henderson is where you take your A-game once you’ve developed an A-game. That’s because designers Jay Moorish and David Druzisky put plenty of fire in belly of this dragon with tight fairways, strategic bunkers and bouncy landing areas that might have you falling on your sword instead of slaying the beast.

The homes: Toll understands the concept of location, location, location. Like Red Rock, MacDonald Highlands also boasts mountain and golf views, along with amenities geared toward active and resort-oriented lifestyles, with three neighborhoods parks covering 10 acres and offering tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, play areas and picnic facilities, not to mention walking and nature trails. Floor plans are similar to Toll’s offerings at Red Rock, with one offering a first-floor master retreat. There are a couple of additional standouts here: the four-bedroom, four-bath Brindisi floor plan has a three-car, split garage and motor court, and the Treporti model is a dramatic, two-story with an outdoor entertainment area and indoor recreation center. Prices run from the high $700,000s into the $900,000s.

The buzz: The private backyard or side-yard putting green option is available here, as well. You’re probably going to need it if you expect to slice and dice DragonRidge. Good luck with that.
