Knowing How the Swing Works

Glenn Monday’s book takes a fresh approach — and his lessons are designed to be adaptable to all players.

By Charlie SchroederPublished: May, 2005

Wouldn’t it be great to have an instructor with us every time we hit balls at the range — someone to shape our swing into a fluid, repeatable motion?

Unless you’re a tour player or have the last name of Gates or Buffet, the chances are pretty good you’ll spend most of your time on the practice tee alone, grooving your swing without the benefit of a well-trained eye.

Los Angeles teaching professional and The Golf Channel instructor Glenn Monday wants to change all that. His new book, “Know Your Swing,” is intended to teach the reader how to build a good golf swing without the presence of an instructor.

Monday sets the tone of the book by emphasizing the importance of the left side by quoting Bobby Jones’ dismissal of the right side: “The only thing the right arm should do in the golf swing is stay out of it,” Jones said.

From there, Monday teaches the swing from end to beginning — progressing in reverse order from the follow-through, back swing, grip and leg action. It’s a method that Monday has successfully developed by teaching thousands of golfers for more than 35 years.

Monday backs up each lesson with tips and images so the reader can choose which one works best for him. In the ideal finish, Monday says, “the butt of the club [should point] toward the target, like the barrel of a gun.” He offers an anti-slice thought : “Keep your glove hand in the finish position, but take the club out of it with your other hand and open the glove hand fully. You should appear almost like a waiter holding a tray.”

Readers will find many great swing tips in the book. Monday’s lessons about left side control can be applied to all parts of the game. Plus, Monday, who in 2003-05 was named one of the top instructors in America by Golf Magazine, keeps the reader entertained with quotes from some of the best players in the game.
