Mental Breakdown

5 things you should never do on the golf course.

By Southland Golf MagazinePublished: April, 2005

Show up to the course unprepared.
Obvious advice, yet how many golfers actually prepare before a round? By not stretching, focusing, breathing, and getting into the proper rhythm, your body and mind can’t adjust accordingly to the golf mindset.

Have unrealistic or great expectations.
If you play once or twice a week and expect to shoot the lights out, your expectations are out of whack. If you don’t stretch or work out the proper muscles you can’t expect to have the same swing as the pros. The more you think you can dominate this game without expending any effort, the more frustrated the game will become. Know what you can do and be pleasantly surprised when better things happen.

Disregard your pre-shot routine.
This may be one of the easiest parts of the game to write off. Everyone wants to have a great time on the course playing with friends or conducting business, but if you also want to play well you must continue to focus prior to and during each shot.

Have mechanical swing thoughts during your round.
We’ve all seen the pros on TV tweaking their swing after a shot, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea for you to do it. If you start tweaking your swing mid-round, then you’ve lost focus of where you want the ball to go. Sending the ball to a target is the name of the game.

Get ahead of yourself or dwell on past shots.
You know number 16, that treacherous par 4 that always gives you trouble? Well, it’s best not to worry about it when you’re on the 4th hole. By getting ahead of yourself, your thoughts are diverted to the future. Golf shots can only be played in the present. And, by the way, don’t use the word treacherous when describing a hole.
